Having grown up in the heart of Appalachia, I understand the many challenges facing the people there. As Governor, I serve on the Appalachian Regional Commission, created by Congress in 1965, to improve the economic and community well-being of the people of Appalachia. That’s why I was pleased to announce Monday the 16 community and regional projects I am recommending for ARC funding.

These innovative projects will help high school students plan for college, train workers, provide housing, improve water and sewer systems, ensure 6,000 women are screened for breast cancer—and create more than 1,000 jobs. Right now, the jobs are really criticaland jobs are my number one priority.
The best part was getting make the announcement at Transylvania Vocation Services, in Brevard, where they help train and employ adults with disabilities. The TVS staff will continue to do their important work in part through one of the ARC projects. That’s good news for all!
